Pedestrian Safety Workshop

September 24, 2003

Sponsored locally by Wheels and Feet Task Force

Leadership provided by Preston Tyree, the Executive Director of Community Mobility Institute, a non-profit corporation performing research and education in transportation issues that affect our neighborhoods.
 

 

Problem locations identified during the workshop:
  • Crosswalks at Hwy 281 and 3rd, Hwy 281 and 4th
  • Crosswalks at Pecan and 3rd, Pecan and 4th
  • Need sidewalks on outside perimeter of town square
  • Modification of turn lane on Hwy 281 between 3rd and 4th streets
  • 83 foot width of 3rd, 4th, and Pecan Streets

    Recommendation/changes the group decided on at the workshop:

  • Improve/install sidewalks on both sides of the street in the square area
  • Install pedestrian friendly curb extensions at all crosswalks
  • Install crosswalks at Hwy 281 and 3rd, Hwy 281 and 4th add 4th crosswalk), Pecan and 3rd, and Pecan and 4th
  • Modify turn lane on Hwy 281 between 3rd and 4th 

    Other ideas presented were

  • Opening for traffic of undeveloped portions of 1st and 2nd Streets
  • Medians to help control traffic
  • Improve Pecan Street for pedestrians and motor vehicles
