Park
Concepts and Standards
Several
professional standards were consulted in
planning, including the National Recreation and
Park Association's Park, Recreation, Open Space
& Greenway Guidelines, various American
Association of State Highway and Transportation
Officials publications, and guidelines published
by the American Planning Association and the
American Institute of Architects. The planning
team built upon this foundation with a detailed
debate about the options within these guides,
and selection of appropriate local standards. In
brief, these standards include:
1.
An emphasis in all facilities/amenities on human
health and safety, especially traffic safety for
children and flood control.
2.
Native plants in all landscaping, with an
emphasis on minimizing the costs of landscape
maintenance.
3.
Native materials in all facilities/amenities
(note: where concrete, metal, and other
non-native materials are required, use
construction/design techniques to mitigate
visual and aesthetic impacts.)
4.
Facilities/amenities should include historic
and/or natural interpretation elements to the
greatest extent possible.
5.
Design of all facilities should take into
account multiple potential uses and a variety of
users.
6.
Facilities should be designed and maintained to
promote economic development to the greatest
extent possible.
