A recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900Georgia Avenue NW
Washington, D.C. 20307-5001According to the way that the Department calculates, the Post has 74 paid up 2008 members. We are now half-way through the Legion 2009 fiscal year and only 65% of the 2008 membership has renewed. I know that times are tough, but I hope the dues increase to $40 didn’t discourage many members. If the $40 is truly an impediment to renewal, please tell a Post officer. As I have mentioned before, the Post only “breaks even” on the dues after postage, Xeroxing, utilities and the $26 going to the Department are taken into account.
You may not have noticed, but the VFW in Johnson City has lost its charter and its building in the last couple months. But you do know that came close to happening to our Post in October of 2006. I understand that the membership in both our Post and theirs is aging and that is a real problem. On the other hand, all veterans who have served since 1990 are eligible for Legion membership so there is a large pool of membership candidates. Unfortunately because of privacy laws, the Legion is not privy to government servicemen lists. Please, talk up the Legion to people that you know. Please, make suggestions to Post officers.
Is your church praying for the safety of its members on active duty? See if your minister will provide such a list to the Post. We can make their families aware of Legion programs which might benefit them or their loved one and recruit from the list too.
Starting with a half dozen people or so in 2007, we are now up to a dozen who participate regularly in Post activities in one way or another; monthly Blanco Market Days food sales, collection of food for the Good Samaritan Center, the chili cook offs and the color guard to name only a few activities. Unit 352 has increased its tempo of operation over the same period. Post 352 really needs the participation of more of its membership. Pick some activity that you enjoyed and tell an officer that you want to do it again.
I hope to see you at the Christmas party on the 20th. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours.

Recruiting new members for the Post
involves raising awareness about the Post and its activities. We have been
putting articles in the newspapers and we have been distributing this
bulletin outside of Legion circles, but we need people to recognize a
Legionnaire in public so that the Legionnaire answers questions about the
Legion and the Post and can invite wartime vets to our meetings. Some
officers have unofficially adopted the hat that you see pictured and wear it
often in public. If you would like to help our recruiting, you can order a
cap directly from Legion emblem sales (item 708.137 @ $13.95) and wear it as
much as possible. The legion does not embroider this particular style, but
you can have Post 352 Blanco, Texas put on your hat locally by Digital
Expressions 830-228-5084 for $8.00 (or less if we can get a bulk order). By
the way, this baseball hat can not replace the official dark blue overseas
cap that is required for official Legion meetings.
